It is important to me that I am honest with you.
Yes, I have followed God into a career and life-commitment of helping people know Jesus. I’m thrilled that he called me to do that, and I believe it is the most important message we can share with others. I am fully committed to this.
However, I want to be careful that I am not giving you a false view of me. You might imagine me as someone who is constantly telling other about Jesus.
That is not true.
I work lots of hours, have a family, and live a pretty normal life.
My writings to you might give the impression that I’m eager to talk about God to every person I can. That is not true.
When I go to the grocery store, I’m really wanting to simply buy what I need and do it as efficiently as I can. I’m not walking into the grocery store hoping that I can talk to someone about Jesus.
Further, my heart does not break for people who need Jesus, as much as I wish it did. I’m simply not a highly emotional person, and it tends to be true in this area also. I like talking to people about God, but I’m pretty calm about it.
It’s easy to have the image of “an evangelist” as someone on stage, energized, dramatic. That’s not me. It might not be you either.
I’ve been on many airline flights where, at the beginning of the flight, I’ve said, “God, I really want to get some work done, and I don’t want to talk to anyone. But if you really want me to talk to someone, I am willing.”
On my last international flight, I was tired, and I literally prayed that the person sitting next to me for the next 9 hours would NOT be able to speak English! (I believe in specific prayer.) And, perhaps to your surprise, God did answer that for me. 🙂
And, as it turned out, at the end of the flight, we were able to converse just enough, that I told her about EveryStudent.com in her language, which was Albanian. I wrote it down for her, and she seemed very happy to be able to look it up later.
Ok…bottom line…I want you to know I’m not always sharing my faith. And, I do not always care about the salvation of every person I meet.
Yes, I try to be kind to others, but I’m not always trying to share the gospel with them.
Mostly, I try to remain open to God, let God accomplish his will, if he wants to use me in some way.
Often, it is not me, but God who initiates conversations that I have with people. It’s almost like God starts the conversation on some other topic, either by the other person or myself. As the conversation continues, God presents an open door. He does do this often. So, in a sense, I do wind up talking to people fairly often about God.
But it is not because I have a great passion to talk to as many people as possible.
I am inclined to think that God works through me and you in a kind way, taking into account our personalities and our ways of conversing with others. I believe God brings people across my path, because he knows I can help them, partly through what I say, but also through pointing them to EveryStudent.com.
I just want you to know…you do not need to have an out-going personality, or feel deeply compassionate about lost people, in order for God to use you. Just follow him. Be sensitive to God and opportunities he puts right in front of you.
