How to Trust God’s Love

I like bottom lines. I can remember them. I can think about them and let them steer my actions.

What would you say is the bottom line regarding our relationship with God?

  – to listen to him
  – to honor and obey him
  – to know him
  – to talk to him
  – to let him talk to us, teach us
  – to trust God
  – to love God and others

There are no right answers. Many possibilities.

For me, the bottom line in our relationship with God is:

  – to trust God’s love.

Why do I say that?

Because of how often God communicates that to us. Here are a few examples:

“Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.” Deut 33:12

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” 1 Chron 16:34

“The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those who hope in his unfailing love.” Psalms 32:18

I’ve heard Christians raise this issue about faith. “Should I pray and ask God for my needs?” OR “Should I trust God that he will do what is right, and just leave it in his hands?”

It is somewhat a question of active or passive faith.

Personally, I think it all comes together by trusting that God genuinely loves you.

Now it matters. Now it’s very personal. It means not just trusting God to be God. But trusting God to be your God who loves you.

In that regard, why wouldn’t you ask God about your needs? Why wouldn’t you look for answers to prayer?

To trust God’s love for you is why I think God liked King David of the Psalms so much. Through all of David’s intense emotional life struggles, in the end, he believed God loved him. Look at Psalms 59, for example.

He talks about men who lie in wait to kill him. Bloodthirsty men. Yet here is how David ends his Psalm:
“But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. O my strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.”

Today, whatever is going on in our lives, let’s actively trust God’s love.

“You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you.” Ps 86:5
